Terri Zach describing the rocks to undergraduate students

About Me

I am currently collaborating with Dr. Ryan Thigpen in the Earth & Environmental Sciences Department at the University of Kentucky, Lexington, where I am on track to complete my Master's degree in May 2025.

I earned my undergraduate degree at William & Mary with a major in Geology and a minor in Religious Studies. During my time at William & Mary, I had the privilege of working with Dr. Christopher M. Bailey on an honors undergraduate thesis, which earned me departmental honors.

My research delves into geologically significant areas as I endeavor to unravel Earth’s intricate history, with a specific focus on bedrock mapping. The goal of my work is to produce high-resolution maps that aid in assessing geologic hazards and economic resources. Key questions guiding my exploration include: How has the landscape evolved over time? What structural evidence sheds light on the area’s geologic history? When did tectonic events occur, and to what extent did they impact the rocks (including depth and temperature)?

Armed with a Liberal Arts degree, I find it crucial to convey my findings in a meaningful and easily understandable manner. As geoscientists, we bear the responsibility of narrating Earth’s story to a broad audience, fostering an understanding of the profound journeys our world has undergone.
